What is spangled galvanized steel?

Spangled galvanized steel is a type of galvanized steel plate with a unique zinc flower crystal texture on its surface. By controlling the cooling rate and composition of the zinc liquid in the hot-dip galvanizing process, the zinc layer forms regular or irregular flake or snowflake shaped crystal patterns during solidification, which combines anti-corrosion performance and decorative beauty. This material is made of cold-rolled steel plate as the substrate, and after hot-dip galvanizing treatment, the zinc layer forms an alloy layer with the iron substrate. It not only prevents steel corrosion through sacrificial anode protection principle, but also gives the surface a silver white to blue gray metallic luster due to the diffuse reflection effect generated by zinc flower crystallization. Its typical applications include building curtain walls, roof corrugated panels, household appliance casings, and other scenarios that require both durability and appearance. For example, galvanized corrugated panels in industrial plants often use flash galvanizing technology to enhance visual quality.

1. Definition and Core Characteristics of Flash Galvanized Steel

Spangled galvanized steel is a metal material that forms a uniform zinc layer on the surface of steel through a special electroplating process. Its core value lies in the sacrificial anodic protection effect of zinc, which significantly improves the corrosion resistance of steel. Compared with ordinary galvanized steel, the zinc layer of spangled galvanized steel has higher density and adhesion, and the surface presents a mirror like luster, hence the name "flash".
The key characteristics of this material include:
(1) Excellent corrosion resistance: The thickness of the zinc layer is usually 8-15 μ m, which is 2-3 times that of ordinary hot-dip galvanizing. It can maintain no red rust for 500 hours in salt spray test
(2) Aesthetics: Surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 μ m, reflectivity ≥ 85%, meeting industrial mirror standards
(3) Processing adaptability: The bonding strength between the zinc layer and the substrate is ≥ 35MPa, which can withstand cold processing such as stamping and bending without detachment

(4) Environmental friendliness: Adopting cyanide free electroplating process, the waste liquid treatment complies with the EU RoHS directive

The production of spangled galvanized steel involves three core processes: pre-treatment, electroplating, and post-treatment. The specific process parameters are shown in the table below:

In the electroplating process, pulse electroplating technology is used instead of traditional DC electroplating. By periodically changing the direction of the current, zinc ions achieve a dynamic balance of "deposition dissolution re deposition" on the cathode surface, forming a zinc layer structure with fine grains (average particle size ≤ 5 μ m) and tightly arranged. This microstructure is the key to obtaining excellent performance of spangled galvanized steel.

3. Performance Comparison and Selection Guide

Compared with conventional galvanized products, spangled galvanized steel has significant advantages in performance indicators:

Performance Indicator

Flash Galvanized Steel

Ordinary Hot-Dip Galvanized

Electrogalvanized

Zinc Layer Thickness (μm)

8 - 15

5 - 10

3 - 8

Bonding Strength (MPa)

≥35

20 - 30

15 - 25

Salt Spray Test (h)

200 - 300

100 - 200

Surface Roughness (Ra)

≤0.8

1.6 - 3.2

0.4 - 0.8

When selecting, the following factors should be considered:
(1) Corrosion environment level: Ordinary galvanizing is optional for environments below C3 level, while flash galvanizing must be used for environments between C4-C5 level
(2) Processing requirements: When deep drawing (elongation>30%) is required, priority should be given to selecting specifications with a zinc layer thickness of ≤ 10 μ m
(3) Appearance requirement: When there is a requirement for mirror effect, the surface roughness Ra value needs to be specified

(4) Cost sensitivity: The cost of spangled galvanized steel is 25-40% higher than that of ordinary galvanized steel, requiring a balance between performance and budget

4. Typical application scenarios

(1) In the field of architectural decoration: components that require long-term exposure and aesthetic appeal, such as curtain wall keels, elevator guide rails, handrails, etc
(2) Home appliance industry: components such as refrigerator liners, washing machine casings, and air conditioning sheet metal parts that require fingerprint and corrosion resistance
(3) Automobile manufacturing: stamping parts such as chassis components and body coverings that require both anti-corrosion and appearance considerations

(4) In the field of new energy: structural components such as photovoltaic brackets and energy storage cabinets that require weather resistance for more than 25 years

5. Technological development trends

The current spangled galvanized steel technology is evolving in the following directions:
(1) Composite coating technology: Developing alloy coatings such as Zn Ni and Zn Al to increase corrosion resistance to 3-5 times that of traditional galvanizing
(2) Nanostructured control: By optimizing the electrolyte formula, nanoscale structures with zinc layer grain size<1 μ m can be achieved
(3) Functional surface: integrating special functions such as self-cleaning and antibacterial, expanding the high-end application market

(4) Green Manufacturing: Developing environmentally friendly processes such as chromium free passivation and water-based sealing agents to meet carbon neutrality requirements

6. Quality Inspection Standards

The quality control of spangled galvanized steel must strictly comply with the following standards:
(1) Appearance inspection: D65 light source is used for visual inspection at a distance of 1000mm. Slight color difference is allowed, but peeling and exposed substrate are not allowed
(2) Thickness measurement: Using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, 5% of each batch is sampled, with an allowable deviation of ± 1 μ m
(3) Adhesion test: Conduct grid cut test according to ISO 2409 standard, reaching level 0 (no detachment)

(4) Corrosion resistance verification: After 500 hours of neutral salt spray test (NSS), the red rust area is ≤ 5%

7. Industry application prospects

With the continuous improvement of material performance requirements in the manufacturing industry, the market demand for spangled galvanized steel is showing a rapid growth trend. It is predicted that the global market size will reach $12 billion by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.3%. Especially in emerging fields such as new energy vehicles, 5G base stations, and high-end equipment, its position as a key structural material will be further highlighted.

Spangled galvanized steel, as a combination of galvanizing process and material aesthetics, is transforming from traditional industrial materials to functional decorative materials. Its core advantage lies in the physical properties of zinc flower crystallization, which ensures the anti-corrosion performance of steel (salt spray test durability is 2-3 times that of ordinary cold-rolled steel plates) while endowing the surface with unique metallic luster and texture. This material is not only widely used in the construction industry for roof and wall decorative panels, but can also be customized with different sizes of zinc flower patterns by adjusting the zinc liquid composition and cooling process, meeting the personalized needs of scenarios such as home appliance casings and automotive parts. In the future, with the integration of environmentally friendly technologies such as chromium free passivation and nano coating, spangled galvanized steel will further expand into emerging fields such as cultural and creative products and smart homes while maintaining weather resistance, becoming a new material that combines practical value and artistic expression.
