Technical requirements for processing color steel tiles

Color steel tiles, as the core material of building enclosure systems, are widely used in industrial plants, storage facilities, and civil buildings. The processing quality directly affects the waterproofing performance, durability, and aesthetics of the building. From raw material selection to finished product delivery, the processing of color steel tiles must follow strict technical specifications, covering key aspects such as material properties, forming processes, surface treatment, and finished product inspection.
1、 Raw material selection: performance adaptation, source determination

The substrate of color steel tiles is usually cold-rolled steel plate or hot-dip galvanized steel plate, and its quality directly determines the strength and corrosion resistance of the finished product. Cold rolled steel plates need to have uniform thickness and good plasticity to avoid cracking or deformation during processing; Hot dip galvanized steel plates require uniform coverage of the galvanized layer, without defects such as missed plating, peeling, or zinc nodules, to provide long-term anti-corrosion protection. For coastal or high humidity areas, it is recommended to use substrates with thicker galvanized layers or zinc aluminum magnesium alloy coated steel plates, which have significantly better corrosion resistance than traditional galvanized plates and are suitable for corrosive environments.

The coating system is the key to surface protection of color steel tiles. The primer should have good adhesion and be not afraid of alkalinity to isolate the substrate from direct contact with the external environment; The topcoat needs to balance weather resistance, UV resistance, and decorative properties. For example, polyester coatings are suitable for general environments, while fluorocarbon coatings are more suitable for chemical parks or heavily polluted areas due to their good resistance to chemical corrosion and self-cleaning performance. The color of the coating should be uniform and consistent, without defects such as color difference, sagging, or pinholes, to ensure that the finished product has a beautiful appearance.

2、 Molding process: Accurate control, stable structure
The formation of color steel tiles usually adopts roll forming technology, which bends the steel plate into the desired waveform through multiple sets of rolling mills. Before forming, it is necessary to adjust the spacing and angle of the rollers according to the design drawings, and determine that the peak height, wave distance, and coverage width meet the technical requirements. Insufficient peak height will reduce drainage rate, leading to water accumulation and leakage; If the wave distance deviation is too large, it will affect the overlap sealing between tiles and cause leakage risk. Some enterprises have introduced CNC forming equipment to achieve automated adjustment of roll parameters, improving forming accuracy and production speed.

During the rolling process, it is necessary to strictly control the tension of the steel plate and the rolling speed. Unstable tension can easily lead to steel plate deviation or surface scratches, while excessive speed may cause tile rebound deformation due to insufficient forming. For thick plate processing, a progressive forming process should be adopted, gradually bending in multiple passes to avoid material fracture caused by excessive deformation in a single pass. At the same time, it is necessary to regularly inspect the wear of the rolling mill rolls and replace severely worn ones in a timely manner to prevent ripples or indentations on the tile surface caused by mold defects.

3、 Surface treatment: multiple protections to enhance long-term durability
Surface treatment is the core process of anti-corrosion and decoration for color steel tiles. For hot-dip galvanized steel plates, surface pretreatment, including degreasing, phosphating, and passivation, is required before forming to remove oil and rust, form a dense protective film, and enhance coating adhesion. Cold rolled steel plates require galvanizing treatment, followed by surface pretreatment to ensure a complete anti-corrosion system.
The painting process should be completed in a clean workshop to avoid dust and impurities from mixing into the paint. The application of primer and topcoat should be uniform and consistent, and the thickness should meet the standard requirements. For example, insufficient thickness of primer will reduce the anti-corrosion effect, while excessive thickness of topcoat can easily cause sagging or cracking. Some companies use electrostatic spraying technology to evenly adsorb coating particles onto tile surfaces through high-voltage electrostatic fields, improving coating uniformity and utilization efficiency. After the coating is completed, it needs to be cured to ensure sufficient cross-linking and solidification of the coating, forming a tough protective film.

For color steel tiles that require long-term exposure to strong ultraviolet radiation or corrosive environments, UV absorbers or anti-aging agents can be added to the topcoat to slow down the aging rate of the coating. At the same time, sealant can be applied to the edges of the tiles to prevent moisture from seeping in from the overlap, further enhancing their water resistance.

4、 Finished product inspection: multidimensional verification to determine quality standards
Finished product inspection is the next level in the processing of color steel tiles, which requires full verification from three dimensions: dimensional accuracy, physical properties, and appearance quality. Dimensional inspection requires the use of tools such as vernier calipers and laser rangefinders to measure key parameters such as peak height, wave distance, coverage width, and straightness. The tolerance range meets the design requirements. Excessive straightness deviation will affect the splicing accuracy during installation, leading to a decrease in the overall stability of the structure.

The physical performance testing needs to verify the flexibility and non corrosiveness of color steel tiles through bending tests, impact tests, and salt spray tests. Bending test can verify the crack resistance of tiles in a bent state; Impact testing is used to evaluate the toughness of materials under low temperature or dynamic loads; The salt spray test simulates a corrosive environment to verify the protective effect of the galvanized layer and coating. For color steel tiles that need to withstand dynamic loads, such as the tiles around the roof daylighting strip, fatigue tests are also required to verify their long-term performance under long-term cyclic loads.

The appearance quality inspection should focus on whether the tile surface is flat and smooth, without defects such as color difference, sagging, pinholes or scratches. The overlapping edges should be neat and free of burrs, ensuring a tight fit during installation. For bulk products, sampling inspection is required to ensure stable quality of each batch. Through strict full process control, color steel tiles with good performance and beautiful appearance can be produced, providing long-term enclosure for buildings.
